A frozen beach---really?? yes last year on the very tip of South Jersey..this is what 2011 looked like coming in. For myself, that is how the year seemed...FROZEN...not warm and nice, but cold and hard. Farewell 2011...it was not the best of our times.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Welcome 2012---this year will hopefully be a better year for all of us. Too many are plagued with unemployment, housing issues, and more. May we all find warmth and comfort in new beginnings.

As is my usual style...I have made some goals for myself [resolutions too]. One of which is to blog more regularly, so this post is already hours behind. But being an oldster, [59 later this month LOL], my late night efforts are few and far between. Throw in a few celebratory drinks and my brain fizzles and giggles!

Coming later...my escapades and efforts at New Year's treats--Danish Style.

Here is what I hope 2012 memories will look like when it comes to a close in 52 weeks.

In the stillness of that night, long, long ago....a mother gently swaddles her newborn baby...counting fingers and toes, remarking at the long eyelashes....the dimple here or there..

all moms do it and marvel at the wonder of it all. This is such an ordinarily extraordinary event but so much more that night.

Mary held God incarnate, Emanuel.

The savior is born...But on that night, he is just a baby, yet So much more.

Holiday Traditions

This blog might have started as a 'Sewing Shoppe' blog for updates, events, happenings, designs and such. But with the actual shop closed and life taking many u-turns along the way, I am expanding my vision to include many other life things. SO--Sew--on we go to a tale of one of my Holiday Traditions----Sausage making.

It all starts with the baby bathtub, my baby bathtub from 59 years ago! Pink enamel heavy tub. My parents only had the best in 1953. Young families today have it soooo much easier with their babies bath time. I did use this for my oldest daughter 30 years ago...pink enamel is very slippery with a baby in water, the phrase ' don't throw the baby out with the bathwater' comes to mind.

Why a bathtub? because it works when you have many pounds of ground meat ==we have done 20 --this year I am doing 10 pounds of ground fresh pork [a full fresh ham-or shoulder as many call it]. I had the butcher grind it for me and give me the bones and skin back which is what is used to make the soup for mixing the sausage. Not a very impressive soup...but tasty in the sausage. When cooking the bones and such, I do add an onion and a pinch of salt. Just a pinch.

Back to the bathtub...in goes the ground pork, to that then is added some flour, salt, pepper, ground up onions, and probably the hardest thing these days to find...extra fat. Yes, fat. Lucky for me, my store understands Fat...but they have to take a day to get it together since most meats today are pre trimmed to very lean, which is good in one way, but we have lost the flavors of old with such lean meat. So now what does the tub look like---see for yourself--- a bit blurry I am sorry...onions can make you cry.

Now the part that many people don't like to know, this all must be mixed together well...and the only piece of equipment that works the best is the Hand. And this year, only my right hand could mix this since my left shoulder/hand is not being very helpful. A story for another time. So I mix this all together making sure to blend all the components together well. Then a cupful at a time of soup until it is the right consistency. Something learned from my mom Maren, who learned from her mom Olga, and so on back in time. Here I have to say, I do not know how my grandmom Olga, did this for so many years for feeding the school kids - 200 of them, 5 days a week. She made sausage at least every other week that I know of. No...she had big big meat vats in her cellar...and a big grinder...thankful for 'modern' technology. She fed the kids hot lunches until she retired at I believe, 70 plus. I hope I can do similar into my 70s.

Okay, so it gets mixed together...rests for a bit while you prep the containers for the mixture. Casings...hog casings...not the most appealing vision, but such a biology lesson or anatomy lesson for all. Taking the stringy, rubbery ribbons and rinsing them, opening them with water is actually fun in a way. Makes you appreciate how those tummy pains and 'wind' can happen. ;-) As a medically oriented person, I find anatomy fascinating. We tend to forget how parts of the body can be so small yet so mighty!

Okay...so take a spoonful of meat mix, cook it up in a frypan -like a burger- and taste test. Official tester is my hubby...this year we are really good to go. Of course he groans now, because now he has to get involved in the filling of the casings...a manual task requiring four hands...two to work the grinder/stuffer, one to support and judge size and weight of the links. But once a year, we do this so we have for our Christmas Feast and the rest is frozen for meals in the New Year. My mom, sister and I have done this for over 30 years, it's been 10 years since mom helped for the last time. Every year since, I have gone on the hunt for the perfect meat, casings, fat and onions. Once purchased, it has to get done right away...and that always means going into the night hours after dinner.
So we set up the manual grinder and stuff away our tub full of mix.

In the interest of 'sewing' under that lovely plastic table cover is my cutting table...turns out to be the perfect thing to use.
So we filled the casings and have our Christmas sausage...two pieces weighing over 4 pounds total. Plus another 15 pounds of sausage pieces for meals in the New Year.
Freezer bags filled, weighed and labelled in the end we have 17 pounds of Danish style, simple plain pork sausage. No spare fillers, no extra spices, just a simple meat that when prepared and served with mashed potatoes, apple-sauce, pan gravy if you like, and vegetables is just delicious. 'Bangers and Mash' my dear friend Beverley calls it. One of her favourite meals that she requested every time she visited our home. I think of her every time and I remember my family traditions that make the holidays so special.

A full fourth week we have this year. Seven more days to hope, to wait, to rejoice, to love. Anticipation is building for the arrival of Our King and Saviour. And today, we see the faith and trust, true acceptance of God's will, in the Blessed Virgin Mary. 'Let it be done unto me'. Can we say that? I can't..yet I have a son who has placed his life in trust with the Marines. He also trusts that this is God's will. Like Mary, I kissed his little toes and hands, the top of his head...I nursed him...and now I am very proud of him for serving his country.

Mothers around the world, love their babies and young children. We all do have a small piece of Mary's trust when we let our sons and daughters leave home for their own lives. It could not have been at all easy for Mary knowing who her son was. It isn't easy for me [or you] to believe they will be safe in today's world.

There is a novena prayer for Advent. It is St. Andrew's novena, which tradition says you say this prayer 15 times a day until Christmas. It started three weeks ago..I have not been able to pray this 15 times a day [once a waking hour?] But I like the prayer's message...and I say it for my son Bryan...to keep him safe.

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment in which

the Son of God was born of the most pure

Virgin Mary, at midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing

cold. In that hour vouchsafe, O my God - To hear

my prayer and grant my desires, through the

merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of

His Blessed Mother. AMEN

Gaudete Sunday = REJOICE or JOY

Happy PINK Sunday of Advent. I wish I had our pastor's homily to put here. A very thought provoking and educational talk on the reasons for, the need for and the JOY of Pink Sunday or Gaudete Sunday in churches around the world.

The short version...historically at one time, Advent was another Lent..lasting 40 days before Christmas with the whole fasting and no meat eating, doing penance etc. Sometime [back ] it was decided to put some 'JOY' in the middle of Advent and stop all the gloomy, penance, sad faces. SO...tickle somebody pink, make someone laugh, share joy with someone this week. The Christ child is coming...be happy. not sad.

Of course, there was more to the lesson, but why pink? For JOY...Rejoicing!! and celebrating He who comes. Only two weeks left! Hope all are rejoicing!!

New Beginnings

Advent begins a new Church Year today.

Now we look forward to new life, new hope and

New Beginnings.

Quietly, prayerful anticipation of a New Life.

For Christians everywhere, this is our New Year's Day.

With this new beginning time, comes the greatest anticipation....Christmas.

The celebration of the birth of Our Saviour.

Most of us only really anticipate the giving and the getting,

the preparation and the celebration of family meals.

The traveling, the cleaning, the decorating.

All to celebrate a baby born 2000 years ago.

May we all remember the reason for the season,

may our waiting and preparation all be in the spirit of a new beginning.

My hope is to find my new beginning this year.

You MIGHT need a good laugh today!!!! These are GREAT !!

1. Sometimes I'll look down at my watch 3 consecutive times

and still not know what time it is.

2. Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument

when you realize you're wrong.

3. I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap

when I was younger.

4. There is great need for a sarcasm font.

5. How the heck are you supposed

to fold a fitted sheet?

6. Was learning cursive really necessary?

7. Map Quest really needs to start their directions on # 5.

I'm pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

8. Obituaries would be a lot more interesting

if they told you how the person died.

9. I can't remember the last time

I wasn't at least kind-of tired.

10. Bad decisions make good stories.

11. You never know when it will strike,

but there comes a moment at work

when you know that you just aren't going

to do anything productive for the rest of the day.

12. Can we all just agree to ignore whatever comes after Blue Ray?

I don't want to have to restart my collection...again.

13. I'm always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word

and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page

technical report that I swear I did not make any changes to.

14. I keep some people's phone numbers in my phone

just so I know not to answer when they call.

15. I think the freezer deserves a light as well.

16. I disagree with Kay Jewelers.

I would bet on any given Friday or Saturday night

more kisses begin with Miller Light than Kay.

17. I wish Google Maps had an "Avoid Ghetto" routing option.

18. I have a hard time deciphering the fine line

between boredom and hunger.

19. How many times is it appropriate to say "What?"

before you just nod and smile

because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said?

20. I love the sense of camaraderie when an entire line of cars

team up
to prevent a jerk from cutting in at the front.

Underwear gets dirty. Pants?

Pants never get dirty, and you can wear them forever.

22. Even under ideal conditions people have trouble locating

their car keys in a pocket, finding their cell phone,

and Pinning the Tail on the Donkey -

but I'd bet everyone can find and push the snooze button

from 3 feet away,

in about 1.7 seconds, eyes closed, first time, every time.

23. The first testicular guard, the "Cup," was used in Hockey in 1874

and the first helmet was used in 1974.

That means it only took 100 years for men to realize

that their brain is also important…

September First OH MY

Happy September 1st!! Already ?? hard to believe. I swear it's only been a few days since the shoppe closed, we moved our home, and more. This will be a very short post as putting a 'new' schedule of postings, emails, and more is under way. The short note here is that now the shoppe is closely accessible to me, after two intense days of moving and semi organizing!! [Lost a few pounds along the way...YAHOO]

So for those of you who are needing things for your sewing habit, please contact me! I can now honestly say I will be able to dig things out! AND I am aiming to update, improve and more the web site and web store.

For now...newest things in place: Latest Australian Smocking Issue 95 which has quite a few projects I am itching to do. Red Gingham is ordered for cover dress!!

The newest Australian Smocking #96 is on it's way...featuring a SAGA friend's creation on the cover!! Congratulations Martha Broyles of Southern Matriarch blog. Note that the shoppe has pink Tiny stripe Swiss Pique in stock...can't wait to make the sample!! It will be just too lovely.

Speaking of SAGA....Convention is coming soon! In Anaheim California. I will be there...plenty of room...lots of classes...please check the SAGA website for information and see some great photos of what it's all about!

Sew much for a short blog...Hope you all have had a wonderful summer and are now headed back to school, work etc. I promise to post more often now that I feel like my life is settling in! Keep stitching all!

Times they are a changing

I have been away from my blog for a long time now. And have seriously considered giving it up as not having time nor 'sewing' reason to keep it going. But this just came across from a friend and I have to share it.

AS amazing as our lives are these days with all the fabulous and wonderful technological growth etc....here are some thoughts and prophecies that I also do believe. I did not...NOT create this list...I am 'copying' and pasting...what I know is absolute plagiarism, but not having the authors name, I can not give credit to whomever. But I do salute them!! who ever they may be. It's long, no photos...not a fancy thing to share...but I hope any one reading this will ponder the changes that will be coming.

On one lighter note...whomever wrote this does not sew obviously...and THAT is one thing that I do not foresee going away...NEEDLES and THREADS...;-) Be still my heart...some things in life can not be done on the Internet...;-p

One more comment about this litany...I suddenly sense my own dear Dad in my heart...these are things he would be saying...even though he welcomed technology and saw it all as good, back in 1972.

Something to think about. Whether these changes are good or bad depends in part on how we adapt to them. But, ready or not, here they come:

1. The Post Office. Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. e-mail, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.

2. The Check. Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with checks by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business.

3. The Newspaper. The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition. That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and e-readers has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an alliance. They have met with Apple, Amazon, and the major cell phone companies to develop a model for paid subscription services.

4. The Book. You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages. I said the same thing about downloading music from I -unes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online
and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book.

5. The Land Line Telephone. Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge
against your minutes

6. Music. This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would like to hear it. Greed and corruption is the problem. The record labels and the radio conglomerates simply self-destructing. Over 40% of the music purchased today is "catalog items," meaning traditional music that the public is familiar with. Older established artists. This is also true on the live concert circuit. To explore this fascinating and disturbing topic
further, check out the book, "Appetite for Self-Destruction" by Steve Knopper,
and the video documentary, "Before the Music Dies."

7. Television. Revenues to the networks are down dramatically. Not just because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers. And they're playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the
lowest common denominator. Cable rates are skyrocketing and commercials run about every 4 minutes and 30 seconds. I say good riddance to most of it. It's time for the cable companies to be put out of our misery. Let the people choose what they want to watch online and through Netflix.

8. "Things" That You Own. Many of the very possessions that we used to own are still in our lives, but we may not actually own them in the future. They may simply reside in "the cloud." Today your computer has a hard drive and you store your pictures, music, movies, and documents. Your software is on a CD or DVD, and you can always re-install it if need be. But all of that is changing. Apple, Microsoft,and Google are all finishing up their latest "cloud services." That means that when you turn on a computer, the Internet will be built into the operating system. So, Windows, Google, and the Mac OS will be tied straight into the Internet. If you click an icon, it will open
something in the Internet cloud. If you save something, it will be saved to the cloud. And you may pay a monthly subscription fee to the cloud provider.In this virtual world, you can access your music or your books, or your whatever from any laptop or handheld device. That's the good news. But, will you actually own any of this "stuff" or will it all be able to disappear at any moment in a big "Poof?" Will most of the things
in our lives be disposable and whimsical? It makes you want to run to the closet and pull out that photo album, grab a book from the shelf, or open up a CD case and pull out the insert.

9. Privacy. If there ever was a concept that we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy. That's gone. It's been gone for a long time anyway. There are cameras on the street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone. But you can be sure that 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. If you buy something, your habit is put into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits. And "They" will try to get you to buy something else. Again and again.

All we will have that can't be changed are Memories

Happy Mother's Day to all! And prayers of remembrance for my mom in heaven that she is always having a Happy Mother's Day. The picture is from a few years back when the GirlsScouts celebrated International Day. Our troop in Jackson, NJ chose Denmark and we had a blast. Michelle is dressed in a basic authentic costume [I still have it] that Mom made. Mom, was from Denmark! and I love my Danish heritage as much as I love being an American.

Today I so wish my mom was still here. Even if she only had the chance to see her great grandson[s] growing up. But this little guy would charm her as he charms me every time I see him! Soon to be 10 months old...what a wonderful confirmation that motherhood is truely a career path with golden rewards!

How can you not just love those eyes n cheeks?

Roses for Mom...from my baby girl.

Don't pay attention to the messy table top...I was in such a hurry to take the photo I didn't 'stage' it.

My baby girl is soon to be 22. Where did the years go. Her older sister, my first born, is now 30 with a 10 year old son of her own. Oldest son is soon to be 28 with a 10 month old son of his own. Young son is 23 and planning on marriage soon.

These are the reason I am a mom. And I love each one as much as the other. I thank them all for making my life full and fufilled. I do want time to slow down and even go backwards to when they were babies and snuggled for no reason.

My largest prayer of thanksgiving goes to my own mom...not here and so very missed. I enjoy Mother's day with my own brood, but I long to enjoy my mom one more time.

This Mother's Day...I celebrate with my fellow mom's and mom's to be.

Happy Mother's day all...to our young compadres...slow down and enjoy the little ones...so soon they grow up.

To my fellow/older friends...Isn't it grand with them out of the house?? ;-)

And to my baby girl Sarah Beth...Thank you dear baby...you do make my heart sing!

The shoppe is packed away for the time...my home is being packed to move.

Family situations make for some difficult times,

but we hope and pray that this too will pass soon.

Holy Days

Holy Thursday evening mass celebrates Jesus giving us His precious body and blood to remember him by. A two hour celebration with washing of feet and beautiful music and more. The joy of this remembrance precedes the sorrow of Good Friday.

Holy Saturday, quiet time of reflection and waiting. Waiting for Sunrise...and the empty tomb. When we will celebrate again with fanfare and trumpets.

Time races on and on and on

April 14th---where oh where has time run off to? Two weeks ago I was trying to sort and find things to pack for my 'ME-cation' with stitching friends. THREE weeks ago [ALREADY?] I was packing things at the shoppe for the move out. ;-{ those things/boxes are waiting for me to resort and finish storing!! when??}
I digress...the point is time is just racing on and on. Now we are headed to Easter..and I have done NOT one stitch of Easter sewing. [YET] sssiiigghhh

For those who are waiting patiently for the internet store/shoppe to open, you will need some more patience. As I have said many many times, LIFE HAPPENS. And for this proprietor it is happening way too much. Just trying to grab this little bit of 'online' time is making today's work plan jumble yet again. Not a complaint, just statement of fact. So the online store is on the 'list' of work things. It will happen...hopefully by Easter.

Along with closing the Mt. Holly shop, my family is also in the process of getting ready to move to a new home. So you can only imagine what moving boxes IN has done to the plan for moving OUT. ;-} It is very interesting to me that life happens in spurts, stutters and waves. Right now...I call this a TSUNAMI for this family. The rumblings are moving into the roaring waves. Faithful readers, more to come.

The Me-cation was wonderful, quiet, reflective, lots of fun with friends and stitching projects. We also made a dent in some shopping excursions...more projects [sigh]...that now are heading into boxes. I highly recommend some version of days away with no 'plans' other than needle n thread. I have no photos as my camera died, but there are some snaps on the cell phone...we shall see if I can get those up. maybe.

Now it is time to move on and take hold of some box and do 'something' with it. Where oh where have my 'genies, fairies, magicians' gone??

[NOT mine...a customer] So she is planning on doing a beautiful dress she found in Sew Beautiful last year. It needs 26 rows pleated on silk [backed with German Interfacing]. Both items available in the shop. AND I have a 32 row Read pleater [for the 26 rows of pleating. Fabric and interfacing purchased. Now it's up to me to pleat this dress front. [cue music/Julie Andrews] OH HELP.

Now, in the course of discussion, it was noted that grandma is doing a size 12 dress, for a large 8 year old. So we decided that since the bodice is 13 inches/plus we need to pleat all 32 rows, and this is along a 2 1/4 yard length of silk. [81 inches the pattern said!]. Have any idea how much silk that is?? to roll on a long dowel. sheeshhh.

The handle messed up the feeding of the
fabric...scotch tape to cover the 'dirty' threads!

Everything started just fine! and look how nice and even it is going !

Remember my NEW FRIEND...this is why!! Grabbing that little bit of selvedge was not happening in those tight quarters with my fingers!! The picture is fuzzzy since holding tweezers and taking a photo...well you try it...;-) But those little tips sure worked wonders!!

Well it went on and on and on...a little bit of shifting up at the top edge.
.but seriously, not a bubble, or any split pleats, missed pleats for the majority of the area!!

Another really goofy shot, but can you see the missing threads here?? TWO slipped out of the needle...even though I had long long tails . The fabric grabs those threads and as I pulled off the needles..the threads stayed in the fabric instead of slipping along...geez...Well..lucky it is on the lower/skirt side...near the side seam...and I was able to rethread the needles and finish.
My customer will just have to play with four or five pleats there when she works that area...
I don't want to redo 'silk'...the holes would be nasty.

Just about at the end of the fabric!! LOOK>>>it is almost perfectly even at the end.
Fabric shifts when you pleat. and when one person is controlling over 14 inches of fabric,
32 needles, one handle, tweezer, and threads....phewwwy...it is a challenge!
And finishing with only a 1/3 of an inch difference from top to bottom??
I think that is purdy dagum good.
[Not really the words I was muttering earlier in the pleating...this fabric should be blushing some...LOL]

THIS is what 81 inches [2 1/4 yards] of silk looks like pleated with 32 rows!!
It covers just under 18 inches and should look absolutely great when smocked!!
Yes there is a dip up/down along the top ...it is the nature of the gears and how they drive the fabric. The piece hangs straight!!

I love challenges. I also fear THIS PARTICULAR challenge each time I work it.

But it took some patience, thought...

LOVE MY NEW FRIEND...[the tweezers]

and now I will no longer consider 32 row pleating [solo] impossible.

One last shot...see the roll of fabric on the curtain rod...propped up with some books so it stays level with the pleater....a big key tip for this 'solo' pleater today!!

Maybe in all my new found free time after the shop closes, I will pleat a piece for me to make a pretty communion dress for a 'someday' maybe grand daughter. We shall see...

Issue 128 [?] of Sew Beautiful, 2010.

It uses the Pasquale Pattern designed by Laura Jenkins Thompson.

This is the postcard that will be mailed out this week. It is also in the email newsletter that will be sent. And it is added to the website. Everyone will be sick of it by months end I am sure, but it is what is happening now.

It is always amazing to me how life's plan is not always what I [we] think it should be. This closing was NOT on my calendar for now. It wasn't even in my mind for any time soon.

But, I believe God has his 'daytimer' plan, and this is how he sees my life moving forward. It took some mental anguish and sleepless nights for me to understand that it needed to happen now. And once the decision was made...I slept. As the days move forward to March 25th, I am understanding more of how I need to let HIS Hands direct my life.

Sadly, I admit that over the last few years, three or so, I have left God out of my life. Not completely out, but certainly not invited in as much as I should. Mea Culpa Mea Culpa Mea Culpa. I see now, as in the Footprints poem, that I have been in His arms all along. Nowhere do I see my footprints, but surely HIS. Thank you God, this prodigal daughter is glad YOU have not abandoned me.

As a Roman Catholic, I have been educated in my church's beliefs and practices. Not all of them do I agree with, nor do I believe that the mortals who make these rules have all the knowledge. I do however believe that they are guided, as we all are, by our Lords gentle hands, to help the many live their lives to the fullest. As I look back over my events in my life, I see His hands, His love, His beauty happening over and over again. I do not see vengeance or anger, though there are a few times when I now see frustration [with me?] which made the events [at that moment] so critical for me to [re] open my heart to His direction.

No I do not read my Bible daily. I don't always pray daily, though I am sure my thoughts are often a prayer of sorts. But I do know this, that I am again, putting my life, my avocation [the shoppe], my health, my family and more in God's hands to show me what comes next. This is how I know I will find the right answers and the right direction to take in the days ahead.

My gratitude to my family, friends, customers, followers, is un-ending. My dream is not dead, just taking some time to review and regroup. I trust we will see it blossom more in due time. When is not the question...Where is the first part. When it is time will be the right time.

My intention here is not to preach, but to voice my feelings about this situation and how I am handling it. The only sane way that I see. As this launches out to all..and more via Face book and this blog, I hope you all will take time to see how maybe, all of us need to invite the Divine presence into our daily lives.

Not a Sewing tidbit...but a first...

Well, yesterday was my first visit with a new medical practice. Not having medical insurance for almost 3 years, I have done alot of praying and hoping for the best with my health. Now, starting with a new doc is not something I take lightly. So after much discussion, we picked a group that our son and daughter in law use, plus her parents etc.

I called and got an appointment for next day...whoo hoo...good job...other practices have been...well let's plan for 1 month from now. I digress...

Got it together [and took the grandson/baby] and arrived on time. [not my usual habit]. Did the paper work...and wow...in to see the Nurse Practicioner within 15 minutes. It's a good day. Weight check...welll...we can skip that part...we know what that is. But wow...the BP check...normal range...YAHOO. So...my only problem....ankle swelling...which has been around for a while now...ever since my first pregnancy 30 years ago...;-(

So now I am the proud recepient/owner of my first 'mature'? daily prescription. A mild diuretic. Starting tomorrow...I guess I am supposed to feel 'grown up' now...NOT...and no I do not feel 'mature' either.
Guess that ~~[maturity]~~ may have to come later.

Sweet Memories--quilt and accessories

This lovely design book arrived today in the shop.
It's been available for a while,
I didn't figure heirloom sewing customers would be interested.
I was wrong.
A customer asked me to get it in. I did.
NOW I am starting one of the ideas for a Sample.
The Pillow dress is smocked and embroidered, just too cute.
So I have the fabric, threads, beads [yes there are beads]
and will get started on following the directions.

Embroidery first, smocking second, construction [ including pin tucked bodice] and then we shall see what my version looks like. The photo is in pinks...I am leaning to doing the bows in blue with the pink roses. BLUE is one of my favorite colors.

My Mom...

1953...January 22....my birthday. Thanks to my mom of course.

2002...February 8....mom passed away in the early morning. I was there, it was quiet.

She was peaceful, out of pain, and beautiful. Now with my dad and all who have gone before.

This gives me peace.

Today I miss her sometimes more than I ever thought possible...nine years later.

Still I thank her for all she gave, did and taught me.

My love of needle and thread, cooking, the finer things in life,

the need for a good education, and the simple things.

I wish she could share the joy of her great grandsons,

the pride of Jon whom she did hold as a baby as he proudly shows his A's in school.

And to see her great grandson JJ...named after his dad who is named after my dad...Joe.

What joy she wold have in him.

I know she sees us all from above,

I just wish we could hear her voice and laughter.

Today I will celebrate her memory as best I can.

Selfishly, I just wish for one more hug...I miss you mom.

Baby it's cold outside

Baby it's cold outside...La la...we all know that song from holidays just past. It's not a Christmas song, but we only hear it during the December holidays. Shame...because boy oh boy is it true today here in New Jersey!! I am at home today, and my heater is running non stop with only 10 minutes between cycles, and this is a house of only 15 years with current insulation and such. I dread my utility bill next month!!

Pictures of the Delaware bay down in Cape May County where I grew up. Frozen waves on the shoreline. Something I only saw twice while growing up [many moons ago]!! While growing up, we always boasted of how 'warm' we could be even in the dead of winter...because the salt waters were always above freezing. Guess those days are not now!

Life is happening....things are changing...weather is frightfully amazing....time for new ventures. As this ice thaws, and changes so will there be some new happenings at the shoppe...stay tuned!!

Yup...it's my birthday! I am another year older, no wiser, no thinner, and many other 'issues'. My birthday celebrates many things...

My parents, Joseph and Maren, met during WWII, married in 45, and welcomed me in 53. A big baby...[maybe why I continue the trend ;-) 10lbs plus. Mom was odd...she breastfed me!! AH the wonders of Danish beliefs...back then!
My Sister, my friend, born three years later the day after my 3rd birthday party!! UH HUH...on the 23rd. She tipped the scales too! over 11 lbs. I do remember bits and pieces of mom not being home...heaven help us...I slept with my dad!!
Race ahead some years...and I celebrate my Husband Hank of almost 32 years now. He has always made this day special in some way, good times, rough times. Love you bunches dear man.
Then my four wonderful children...Michelle, who made my 28th birthday special, Joseph when I was 30, Bryan at 34 and dear dear Sarah Beth who made me [advanced maternal age] at 36!! what would my life be without them?? very very empty.
And now I celebrate my sweet Daughter in law Danielle...she makes Joe so happy.
The absolute fun part of being older [still waiting to grow up] is grandsons. Jonathan who made 48 a great year to be a grand mom; and now J>J> [Joe Jr} who at 6months is such sweet joy.
Add my friends to the celebration, and Life is good.
Stitching, running the shoppe, cooking, gardening, all the things that make a life good. I celebrate!

Don't need any gifts, I live them all year long. Thanks all for the good wishes. Stay tuned...it's gonna be another great year!!

Even though I have far fewer followers than some, I sincerely hope my dear readers will pass this one on. Not often do I 'soap box' about sewing, but there are days when I wish our education system, our grand parents [myself included] would give our youngsters and young adults more chances and more exposure to the needle arts. Today it may not help our pocketbooks as fabric/notions are costing more; but certainly it will help them understand why good clothing is costly if done right.

Like knitting...sewing has not disappeared, it is [hopefully] starting on a comeback trip as more than just Crafting! Quilting is one art of sewing, home decorating is another. Clothing is [in my mind] a very personal defining and rewarding type of sewing art that can create memories for a lifetime along with self satisfaction. As I sit and sew, or knit...my heart sings with memories of my grandmothers [one knitter, one sewing] my own mother and her wonderful creations for ME in my life. I pray and hope that my own children, girls and boys, will have memories along with the treasures I have created for them. And that they may create for their own.

NOW, if I could just have one little grand daughter to sew for...it will be heaven. Love my boys...but oh the girl things in my mind are bursting to be made. [No pressure...just hoping]

Martha also does a great job of writing many of my same thoughts and wishes. I suspect someday we will see her writings published on paper! Seriously dear lady, you should be snapped up!!
Martha accomplishes so much with regards to stitching, and her tutorials are wonderful. Enjoy reading her posts.

We do share one thing this year...becoming grandmothers! Her first grand daughter! my second grand son. I often ponder if we should match them up...they would make a fine pair!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS

So here we are, the end of the year and I am trying to catch up on much internet work, blogging, website, and more. Dear SANTA HUBBY managed to get my laptop up and runnng, albeit with some 'glitches' but for now, I will deal with it. Much of what I need to, have to do is still sitting in the wings as I try to figure out how to get my life on a steady pace.

The holidays have always interfered with routine...even when life was not interrupted by computers, internett etc. This year was no different, and with the fabulous UPSET of dear hubby starting a new JOB..yes he is working!! we had to wait patiently for financial things to settle in. That made Christmas Eve shopping [almost] a necessity. BUT WE COULD SHOP!!

Of course, in the middle of all this, I had a strong urge to stitch and create. Had to...dear little JJ needed a special outfit. He got one, but the first one didn't fit...so recut, resew was the order of the day! But isn't he just the jolly little elf that he should be for his first Christmas??

Can you guess that this is late on Christmas day?? He was so interested in everything!!

The best part of JJ is that he seldom develops the crankies or crying when he is tired. Just quiet...a wonderful thing for a little guy. Of course, the wide open eyes with no smile tell you he is close to done.

My dear son is the photographer and we are waiting for the holiday photos he took. So I have no more to add at this point in time. With all due respect I wish you all

The tablecloth and napkins were purchased by my Air Pilot Father, years ago maybe around 1960's when he traveled to wonderful places like the Azores and Maderia Spain. And thanks to my friend and mentor Lillie I have verified that it is hand embroidered. Not Margab embroidery, but Maderia done.

My memories are many Sunday and Holiday dinners using this table cloth. Stains and ONE small hole attest to that. Certain napkins are more marked than others...meaning they were top used and not rotated as they should have been. [And who was supposed to take from the bottom? not me!] Now that I have learned to iron it from damp to dry, no starch I spent Wednesday redampining the cloth and napkins with fond sweet tears as I prepared for my family Thanksgiving this year. I miss my parents and others at the holidays, but as part of being thankful, I am happy they are in a much better place.

My thanks to Jan of Bessiemary for the link to the little gobblers sitting mascots! Our best bites actually gave the directions and fun comments for the Oreo Turkeys and Pilgrim Hats on their site. My efforts are not as neat as theirs, but so far, a big hit...especially with the hubby!

My biggest or smallest excuse

Not blogging , stitching, cooking, shopping or anything else keeps me more involved than Mr. JJ!! I spend my Mondays and Tuesdays with this wonderful little date and that's my story and I am sticking to it! Now 4 months old and really becoming his own little person. I have to remind myself that these days only come once, and no matter the end result=tired, cranky, happy, sad= they will not return. A lesson that only comes with growing older and gaining vision. As whoever said: YOUTH is wasted on the young. I am thankful this Holiday for my life, health and for stopping along the way to enjoy MR. JJ!!

Rainy Days

It's raining...I have two friends traveling distances today in this weather. I hope they both have good trips and arrive safe and dry!

It is November! I can not believe it. Where does time fly by?? My dear young grandson will be 4 months old in another week...how cute he is and how happy his parents are. Love them all.

My fingers have been fiddlin with some stitching..nothing spectactular...but stitchin. This is the time of year when I think about all of the 'going to make....for .....' as gifts and of course...they aren't done, started or supplies ready. Just not my style to be early or done with anything before the last possible minute. Not the best way to run a business of course, but my own life...keeps me sane!

It's my day!! Baptism for JJ

Since the beginning of September, my life has been one revolving event after another. First there was this little Baptism to take in. Wearing his heirloom romper courtesy of 'Mommom' . A happy little fella and a wonderful day for all!

After the Baptism day, came traveling to Norfolk Va. for SAGA Convention. A wonderful week worthy of it's own post and pictures.

Cominghome we had a treat with Judith Marquis class at the shoppe. Additional news coverage coming up!

Now we are in to October...already the 6th day and the next event is WITCHES BALL in the Mill Race Village! A spooky fun night for all!

SMOCKING ARTS GUILD OF AMERICA

"The purpose of the Smocking Arts Guild of America is preserve and foster the art of smocking and related needlework for future generations through education, service, communication and quality workmanship."

The little Sewing Shoppe is a very proud business member of SAGA. Our 31st annual convention "Tidewater Treasures" will be held September 22nd to September 26th in Norfolk Virginia. And I am going. {At this time in my life, I am on the SAGA Board as Region One Representative...sew...I must go.} And dying is no excuse for not showing up...;-p

All kidding aside...it is largely due to SAGA that I am in business, and I love sharing what I have learned at many SAGA events. I love the art of smocking---not just for babies and children, but for adults, teens and more. Fine Machine sewing goes along with smocking...and I am ever challenged to learn how to perfect a seam, a hem [my nemesis=hems] buttonholes and more.

SAGA is a NON-Profit organization...so we work hard as volunteers to keep our organization moving along. Our main charity work is Wee Care. What is that you ask?

Wee Care is one other area that I am more than excited about. I share a bond with the babies that wear our donated gowns, hats, blankets and more. As a former Maternity nurse, I know first hand why these gowns are important. They support families in time of great need emotionally and physically. No matter whether their baby lives or has passed, mothers and fathers do appreciate the small comfort our beautiful gowns give them. Yes, the thought of a miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth is not a happy thought, it is a part of life that often is dismissed. But for that mom and dad, it is not dismissed. Our gowns make these babies true 'persons' and leave behind a memory. For those preemies that do come home---another great treasure to show how they have grown.

Now...more about convention. For all the attending members it means five days, [24 hours total] of great teachers, classes, inspiration. Along with that goes meeting up with long time, long distance friends. Making new friends, pajama parties [yes even at our age!!] Dreaming of winning a basket [last year 90baskets were raffled off]

All of it culminates in Saturday evening with our Banquet. Here the changing of the guard...President in/out, new board members, raffle baskets, speeches, raffle baskets, songs [last year was fun] dessert [always?chocolate] raffle baskets.

AND I forgot one other very very important part of the week...It is called MARKET...

Since heirloom sewing and smocking supplies are rare finds in many areas of our country/world...this 6 hour window is the ultimate oasis for our members. The ladies have one motto in mind..." if I love it....I need it...even if I have it in my stash already!!" And I always tell them...'your husband called...he said buy anything you want'....teeheee....

All this and more make SAGA Convention the hi-light of my year. Honestly I can say that I would not miss this for anything. I wish all my sewing friends and customers would join in and experience the sisterhood that I have found in this organization. And this year, I have to dedicate my week to my good friend Beverley. Miss you darling, wishing you all the best!!

The hat and outfit were done just before JJ arrived. He is almost 2 months old soon, and his mom got him in it and shared her talented photos!! The hat fits! Even if he does look skeptical!

Stitches include: Bullions, Cast on Flowers, Feather stitch, and more.

Class Cost: $45 and includes your doodle cloth, needles, sampling of threads, notes and light snack.

You bring sharp scissors, embroidery hoop [4-6 inch, round or oval] magnification and light if you need.

Summer is ending

How does this happen every year?? Summer starts on June 21st and it seems like the days are long and slow for July. Then poof...August 1st and bam..August is over. School starts for some middle of August and most by Labor Day. The days are getting shorter [that is the part I really dislike] and the cool dry air arrives heralding fall. Sigh.

Back to school time, Fall weather, smells of fall evening campfires, fireplaces, sweaters and long pants. Many fond memories of school days and holiday anticipation all rolled together. There are four seasons to a year, 90+ days in each. Which do I love the most? ALL of them for various reasons. But Fall may be my first favorite because I always think of it as new beginnings.

New beginnings are in line for ths Fall. The shoppe is lining up some new ideas and using up our available supplies. The end of September Judith Marquis from Canada will visit and teach a class on Hand Embellisments for your projects. Mark your calendar for TUESDAY [yes] September 28th . Full details will be available in another day.

SAGA's 31st National Convention is September 22nd to 26th in Norfolk Va. The shoppe will be closed that week so that I might attend. Here is hoping that we have good fall weather and no storms that week. Hurricane season is in full force...we can't be unaware of that.

See...now I feel like October starts tomorrow...time just keeps flying. I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day holiday and that school starts smoothly for all. Besides new beginnings at the shoppe, my family will be relocating in the weeks to come. It is making for very busy days and nights. NEW BEGINNINGS ... new challenges.

52 days

Yes, 52 days with no car. I survived, but my family is worn out from driving 'Ms. Daisy' and lending me cars. My little four wheeled cart is back!! and working fine it would seem. As this is typed, I am drinking my first morning coffee and anxious to get going back on my routine.

What happened to my car?? For years I have believed that cars are more susceptible to crashes and bumps than anything...that is true. But they can/are HIT BY LIGHTENING!! and friends, with computers in cars now, not just electrical systems, but the whole dang thing can be blown away/out. That is what happened to my little blue car. Hit by Lightning...through the antennae. Not very visible or explainable to my mechanic, who kept trying to figure it out. Ultimately, it was taken to a major dealer/shop and after a month, was finally figured out/verified there. Thank the good lord for comprehensive insurance which did cover the expense!

So, bottom line, if you think not having a car is a little thing in life, think again. Today we are overly reliant on our own private transportation. It is a way of life and thinking that is absolutely overturned when taken away. I am so thankful to my family, for sharing their cars, driving me and more, how to repay them is not easy.

Can I also say that it is a very sad thing that in this country of 'opportunity' that we do not have a public transportation system for all. There is no cohesive means for anyone to get from place to place without their own vehicle. Can we not find or see the need for mass transportation that works? Think about jobs created?? Advantage to the green world? Economic impact for many on so many levels. To me it would be one of a few simple solutions to helping our country gain stability, growth and pride.

The last 52 days have afforded me mental dysfunction on so many levels...now I have my car back and it would seem my brain is firing on all levels. Thank you Tony B....I am grateful for your dogged expertise. Hope I never need it again!!

J.J. Baby arrived this morning at 9:40 am. 7 lbs, 7 oz and 20 inches long. He is perfect and already a very good baby for his momma. My son and daughter in law worked very long and hard to bring this miracle into the world. I am so proud and happy for them. Thanks to everyone for their loving prayers and words of encouragement...to this over tired and anxious grandma. Now I can stitch away to my heart's content knowing he is safe in his parents arms. This photo is at about 1 hour old. Very long, cone head from putting himself in a very snug position!! But bright eyes, healthy fingers and toes....my 'nurse' assessement is perfect. More photos to come.

Happy Birthday dear JJ grandson!! Welcome to the world....may God Bless you and your parents with a wonderful life together!

A very random and quick posting of my busy work the last few days while waiting for JJ to arrive. We are all getting very impatient to meet this little one. And dear Danielle is very tired of waiting, as we can all appreciate the mother's viewpoint.

Smocked cap is Judith Marquis pattern...I made the next to small size...up to 12 pounds I believe. It looks big to me, but I am sure will work.

Fabric is Fabric Finders cotton Chambray. It was a 'leftover' piece that I was not quite a yard by 58 wide. Thrifty cutting including bias for piping!!

I am a very impatient grandma...I pray dear baby arrives soon, safe and quickly. Certainly would be a delightful distraction from the summer heat! Hope he likes his new outfit!

The summer heat is brutal, and the shoppe lost power late Wednesday afternoon, so I am hoping this morning it is restored. Sadly, the phones are also out when power is out...sad.

I AM WITHOUT MY CAR...and that makes it a sewing problem since I can not get to my shoppe. So that makes it a sewing problem. I am ever hopeful that by the end of today it will be fixed, but I am beginning to think that my car is having 'issues' with my mechanic/son. Good grief it makes me crazy!!

Since I am without a car, I am also not open for the last two days. Somehow, I will get to the shop on Saturday...heaven help me I will.

A quick obsession

The current issue of Australian Smocking and Embroidery [#91] has a dress "FROCKSTAR" in it. I have had this fabric in my own 'stash' for almost a year. It turned out quite well. Size 4. I think it should be longer...but I have to see it on some little lady first.
This project took up MY weekend...I was obsessed. It actually took about 2 hours to smock, and about 4 hours to put together.

The original Frockstar is done in Amy Butler Fabric...very modern and sweet. I hope to get some of that fabric in for my customer friends. But in the meantime...this shows you how it can be in something totally different.

Now for the month of June....;-)

Good grief, it is June 2010 already. Seems like 2009 was just here and I was busy getting ready for dear son's wedding. Now we are waiting on our new grandbaby!! The end of June should be his arrival!! Yes a boy. A wonderful surprise for all of us! So if you call the shoppe or stop by after the 15th of June...and I am not here with no notice...you can bet I am at the hospital just snuggling our new baby. Jay Jay...his nickname at the moment.

Traditionally, summer time has not been a busy time for the shoppe. But it would seem that this year is starting out different!! A good thing...but something that is making me spin in many different directions. I do have a plan/calendar for some classes, if I could just find it amongst all my other papers that keep piling up !!

Stay tuned...there are new and some refill patterns arriving daily. My plans and ideas are spinning quite quickly for some great classes for those who are interested. And please do remember that the shoppe is in possesion of and selling Beverley Sheldricks amazing silk ribbon kits. From her drawstring Reticule to small cushions and more. Stop by and see them...they are lovely!!

Before I came down to the shoppe today, I quickly ran over to my local needlework shop: CrossStitch and Frames Unlimited, in Hamilton NJ. [Mercer County]. And what sign did I see>>>'GOING OUT OF BUSINESS' sale. I have to say I am so sad to see this happen. Maybe I did not support them very much, but geez oh pete...they had so many threads, and miscellaneous pieces. I am so soo sew sew sorry they are unable to keep going. Please oh please...support your local shops...maybe a few pennies more will keep them going.

It's Baby Shower Time

The shoppe will be closed on Sunday May 23rd as I am hosting and cooking and cleaning for dear daughter in law's baby shower!! Baby arrives some time late June, early July, so it's getting close!!

Today is MRV"S Creativity for a Cause event in the village. Village wide, it offers participants 2 workshops, lunch and more with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. Today, we are helping OFFICER DOWN, a group supporting police, fire and other first responders and their families.

This morning, the shoppe will be doing a silk ribbon embroidery workshop. Lilly of the Valley in silk ribbon . see the older post for a photo.

Next Creativity for a Cause will be November 13th. Don't know what charity, but it will be fun. See you all soon.

Life happens

Sadly, the shoppe will be closed Wednesday April 28th. A sweet aunt has passed away and we are going to pay our respects. It is a return trip to my father's origins in Pennsylvania, and the family home built by my grandfather. St. Clair, Pa, neighbor of Pottsville Pa, home of Yuengling Brewary, oldest US beer!!

The shoppe will be open on Thursday. And life continues....

It's traveling time for me! Saturday and Sunday I will be attending classes in Delaware. Don't panic, my daughter and grandson are opening the shoppe. A good thing.

The Diamond State Stitchers chapter of SAGA is hosting Cindy Foose, a wonderful fun teacher from Mississippi. AND I am going to have two days of fun. Just as a sidebar, Cindy is the mother of the wonderful Cook Martha Foose. I need to pick up that cookbook...

Anyway, I am off to learn about hems and finishing techniques; Smocking for Texture and more. The better part is that I will be hanging with my pal Melynda. A fun time will be had by all!!

Okay, so I don't get much done these days as far as blogging is concerned. But today I have to post this question to anyone coming by to visit....Please let me know which say three of these knits you would like to see in stock at the shoppe. Michael Miller is previewing these and little birdies are talking to me how nice they are. Which would you like. [besides basic white, cream etc...some solids will be standard]....

There are more I am sure, but we can start here. 100% cotton interlock, according to one review, less edge roll than jersey knit. I see many of them in 'big' girl things..including leggings...can't wait to see what people choose. I have too many favorites to say...let's see how many people agree with me!!

Think start of school...they may not arrive until mid summer...just delivery issues...let's get New Jersey sewing with knits!! Comment please!!

These photos went missing from editing pages. Now they are found again!!

Pleating hint from Judith adams...SUPPORT your long dowel when pleating!! Makes sense now doesn't it? This will free your hands from trying to keep level, turn the knob, pull the fabric etc. [I have also found that when my dowel/fabric is resting down, it feeds much nicer than when I hold it...just my expierence.]

Rainy Days and Mondays [or Tuesdays]

Truely this should have been written yesterday...but rain does not make me nor my computer happy. So, here it is Tuesday, day before St Paddy's day and I have the need to blog.

My trip for SAGA midyear meeting was very busy. AND WET n WILD!! We sat through tornado warnings and downpours. The very same weather [I believe] that came up the east coast from Florida to the Northeast. Even if not that same weather, it was bad down south, and I know it was not great up here. I returned on Sunday into the 'soup' as they say. Monday stayed gloomy, so I simply unpacked, cleaned up and worked on various necessary things from the meeting.

Sunshine today!! Yahoo...and I still have much business to attend to, but at least I have daylight and clear sky to enjoy in the process. Truthfully, I am hoping our wild winter is over and we can see spring and summer coming. I need some flowers to enjoy.

This post has little to do with the shop, but lots to do with my love for sewing and for SAGA. As a member of the volunteer leadership, I am amazed at the amount of time and interest we all spend to make SAGA the wonderful organization it is. We are nothing more than human and mistakes or oversights will happen. To that point, I hope that our members and fellow stitchers understand that and will find the positive points we try to put forth. The challenge is large, and we are working very hard to keep the organization up to date and stimulating. Our continuing goal is to maintain and support : "The purpose of the Smocking Arts Guild of America is preserve and foster the art of smocking and related needlework for future generations through education, service, communication and quality workmanship."

For me the key words here are 'future generations, education, and service'. Bringing the art of sewing and all that it encompasses to the public is a huge challenge. Communication is tough for many reasons and we are also purposed to update that process as an ongoing project. My continuing wish would be that all our members consider that point and make it a personal goal to help share our love of sewing and SAGA's purpose in a positive light.

To that end, I invite anyone interested in learning more about sewing, smocking, embroidery and more to visit a SAGA chapter or our National website : www.smocking.org for great information and friendship in all matters sewing.

Holly Berries meet tomorrow, March 17th at The little Sewing Shoppe. The meeting will start later, around 1:30pm as I do have a business meeting prior that I must attend. This meeting is a general sit and stitch meeting with some planning and organizational matters to be discussed. Always bring a project to work on!! We love seeing each others work and help each other work out questions about any stitching issues we may be having.

Time doesn't want to slow down. Here it is March...and I know before I blink it will be Eastertime. GEEZ...

Our class with Judith Adams was a fun yet snowy time!! Judith has never seen such snow, she was 'cold' but a good sport. And in truth, the storm wasn't such a bad thing, since it melted very quickly. Great weather to stitch and have a good time with many friends!! Thanks to all who joined us!!

It is now in Judith's Contract that she will NOT do snow again!! :-) I understand completely, I will not plan any winter teachers for now!

MARCH 10th thru March 12th, [Wednesday, Thursday, Friday] the shoppe is CLOSED.

I am away at the annual business meeting [midyear] for SAGA [ http://www.smocking.org/]. AS Region Representative for the 21 chapters in the Northeast, Eastern Canada and Europe, I am off to help plan and organize our organizational activities. Still Closed...but Saturday OPEN

Okay, so Wednesday took the wind right out of my sails...yesterday just as bad. Today...almost there...feel like doing 'something' but not really wanting to test the full gambit. So...I will remain home, close to comfort, and dabble at a few things. But I will be in the shop Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

Very frustrating to be laid down for over 2 days....but it makes one realize some perspective on importance. It is important to slow down and not be crazy with 'things'. Seriously!!

ONE DAY FLU

Sometimes I think my body just decides it needs a day to recharge. Yesterday was one of those days...I felt like a dishrag most of the day, slept, forced fluids and did basically nothing. Not completely, I did watch 'Ghost' from start to end. Love that Patrick Swayze. Anyway, today is another new dawn and I am feeling almost 100%. So I will be going to the shoppe.

On the other side: HAPPY VALENTINES DAY to everyone. Hope you all have some love stitched into your lives!

A SICK DAY [out of the blue]

The shoppe is not open today...I woke with a pounding headache, and then the tummy upset started. Sorry folks, I do share , but not flu bugs if this is what I have. Hopefully, tomorrow will be better. It has to be for Valentine's day.

The most frustrating part of this is that getting ready for Judith Adams is what is needed and I can not move without my head pounding.

SNOW STITCHING

SNOW IS COMING...how much doesn't matter...it means that the shoppe will be closed SATURDAY the 6th. Not because no one will come visit, but because it is fool hardy to drive 45 min [snow free time] to sit and wait. Sorry folks..please call just because one never knows what is going on.

SNOW IS COMING... a day for stitching. A FREE DAY for stitching...finish a project, start a project...enjoy the peace and beauty of falling snow while creating something beautiful and fun.

FIRE N ICE FESTIVAL

Today is the annual Fire n Ice Festival in the Mill Race Village. It surely is COLLLDDD enough out there for the ice carving and hopefully, the chili contest will warm people up!

Hopefully everyone will stay warm and enjoy themselves. It is not a day for sewing people, but I am here sitting and stitching some in the shop.

February arrives on Monday. NATIONAL SMOCKING MONTH, National Heart Month and more. Plenty of bargins related to those two will be found at the shoppe. And check back on Monday, that post will have some beautiful information!!

My day, my parents, my life. 57 years ago, right about now, my existance began. I thank my parents, Joe and Maren for bringing me into this world. I wish I had thanked them more over the years. And funny thing happenned three years later [1956] my sister was born the day AFTER my party!! So...Happy Birthday Irene...tomorrow is your day.

I share this day with many people that I know...two classmates from High School...Mary Lou and Louise, my Danish cousin Jesper;my neighbor Jim; And stitching friends...many many I just don't remember all their names. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US ALL!! may we have a wonderful day and terrific year 2010!!

Planning and deciding

So, July is 6 months away right?? But in terms of scheduling special classes...only a thought away. So...please mark your calendars...July 8th to 11th GAIL DOANE will be here teaching two/maybe three classes!! My hope is that our choices will appeal to a number of you all. Classes will be [Thursday & Friday 1 project] ] Saturday [1 project] and Sunday [ 1 project] or [Saturday & Sunday=one project]. I am waiting on Gail to offer her insight and thoughts.

There will only be 10 seats each class, and that is the absolute maximum the shop can hold. All classes are Embroidery and Fine Machine Sewing. Final costs are being calculated and will be posted later this month along with the class descriptions.

Sorry for the quick post...but am getting excited that this is going to happen! Check back for more information.

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL 2010 HAS ARRIVED!

Welcome 2010, or is it twenty ten? or two thousand ten? whichever is the correct version...Happy New Year to you all! In many ways I am happy to see 2009 go, in other ways, it reminds me that time moves on regardless of our feelings.

The shoppe will be going under some changes this year. Some are physical, others are scheduling changes. But the most important thing at this date is that there will be a SALE to celebrate MY birthday later this month. The sale will start on Sunday, January 17th and will continue for 8 days thru Sunday January 24th. This would be called a year end or inventory reduction sale by others. It's my birthday gift to you all and I hope you enjoy it. More details coming. But if I said most reductions will be at least 1/2 of my age...how much will that be?

Christening gown completed!

Just a peek at the upper part of the gown. It makes me very happy to see it looking so ethereal!!

Commissioned for a new baby in Utah, it is a gown that Ms. Nancy McEvoy created for
Australian Smocking and Embroidery Magazine. Copied from an original done back in the early 1900's
it is absolutely more beautiful in person than the picture affords.

I will do this again. It is lovely.

Just a quick post, no photos to say...the SHOPPE is closed today, Sunday December 20th 2009. It was also closed yesterday because of the snow storm, but we did get over 20 inches in NJ, so the powers above are just saysing.....SLOW DOWN. So I will.

Sadly, my camera is at the shoppe, so I can not show anyone the beauty of all this, and it is beautiful.

Classes next weekend and more

Just a quick reminder that Barb Meger will be here next weekend, November 14 & 15. As posted above, the classes are fun and certainly affordable. $65 for Saturday includes lunch and kit!! [YOU bring 3x3 scraps of solid colored pink, white, cream or blue fabrics]. Sunday's class is only $35 plus a $16 kit fee where your kit includes a precronstructed pouch, and prepleated insert. ALL you will do is learn the smocking and take it home to finish putting it all together!! HOW EASY...and there will be extra 'pouches' for more quick gifts!! I myself am planning a few HOLIDAY Gifts!!

What a tool...makes little places smoother, neater. BRAIDS OF THREAD...a sewing box staple...29 colors of thread, braided so you pull one piece for repairs. Great value!!handy for college students who have NOT a clue what/how to do some quick repairs.

Weekend of fun coming in November

Saturday= November 14th at the 'little' Sewing Shoppe========

The class is called "Crazy for Embroidery". The teacher is Barbara Meger from Maryland. In six hours you will join together bits and scraps of YOUR own fabric stash and then decorate with some hand embroidery/crazy patch style. Once you create your fabric piece [size about 8 x10] then you can create any one of the four items shown here.

Come, bring your stash pieces [solid color only, no prints] in cream, pink, or blue and have a fun day learning new stitches that you can add to any and all projects. Class will start at 10am and go to 5pm. Class fee will include lunch. Sewing machines will be provided!

HOME from Indy

Sew....sew....I left on Sunday, Sept 27 for Maryland, from the shoppe. Then Monday, 28th my friend Barbara Meger and I left for the 600+ mile trip to Indianapolis Indiana. Where did we go?? Well...to the SAGA 30th annual convention of course. IT WAS FANTASTIC!! Even more so for the people who took all classes. ME? I am currently the Region One Rep for SAGA, making me one of the volunteer board members who are very busy keeping SAGA moving forward and running all year long, but that is not what you want to hear about.

Anyway, I did take two wonderful quick classes. First was a very very sweet doll dress, smocked of course with some lovely little bunnies. I did not take pictures, shame I know...but the dress itself will be done soon. Tess Ellenwood was the teacher and I will have her come spread her fun and talent at the shoppe sometime soon.

The second class was Sunday morning, which is the ultimate "morning" after!! Banquet is Saturday night, good food, good fun and all the baskets are won at banquet. I have brought one home...not for me but for a fellow SAGA pal...shhh not telling until I call her!! There is so much fun at banquet and then after it's a late night...so class Sunday morning...toothpicks help keep the eyes open!!

My bullion class with Vaune was wonderful. And again, this time because my camera was broken, no photos. But her stitching instructions were wonderful and I have conviction that the little baby dress [blue linen] will be done soon.

There is also Market at convention...a super store of all things for wonderful sewing and smocking projects. Fabric, laces, tools, patterns, ideas, ribbons, fun, laughteter. I came home with a few things...some which will be for the shoppe...some for me.

Fun seeing everyone, listening to all the ohh's and ahhs at Show n Share and Design Show...Thank you Maggie B!! I admit to 'over patting' the winner of Design Show...I do apologize Euny. Her lovely dress shows how smocking can be included in adult wear. I know she wore it Saturday to a family wedding!!

Teacher showcase always fills me with awe as I look at all the wonderful ideas, classes, and meet teachers who want to share our love of sewing and the needle arts.

NOW poof...after 6 days of sewing fun...Home again...Thank you Barbara! a smooth and easy car ride home to Maryland. Now I am back in New Jersey and will sort through and get my things organized and get busy on my UFO"S from 2009.

SAGA Convention here we come

Getting ready to go to Indianapolis Indiana foe Saga's 30th Anniversary/Annual convention, in a few days. It is hectic...and one of the things I have been working on is a donation to a basket [raffle baskets...oh my!!] being put together by a wonderful group of SAGA ladies from a chat forum. This group has developed a tradition of a fabulous basket filled with many sewing items and the silk pieces to carry them in. Many of these pieces are based on a teacher and friend of SAGA who at this time is waging war on Breast Cancer. This Scissor hussif is one. A fabulous design that holds two large shears, two small pieces and a seam ripper.

September is month for many things

This POST is a copy of a post from my other blog...please excuse it's jumbled appearance...it runs on and on...For my mom , for Lois and Barb...here are my thoughts and feelings today....

It is 9-11, a date that now holds so much significance in this country and around the world. Who would have thought at our emergency number [911] would always remind us of the loss and terror this day brought 8 years ago. My heart, mind and soul still ache from the memories and scenes of that day. Personally, I did not lose anyone, but there were people connected that touched me and who I remember in my prayers. My mom was still here then, and I was in charge of getting her to the doctor for her heart issues. We were very late...I couldn't see through my tears as I drove, she didn't remember the way. We walked in to the office and the 'receptonist/nurse' said we missed it. Long story short...the Docs and assistants were nearby and did see mom, once they understood how NYC/DC/PA were affecting the days work for everyone. Bless them...Mom lived to see New Years, and then poof...she was gone. 9-11 was to her another Pearl Harbor...very frightening and I will always think of her on this day.

September is also Ovarian Cancer awareness month. A friend of mine has a very good friend who is battling this disease. I am proud to call both of them friends. We are also sewistas [ a sewing fanatic] . I am putting my friends speech here to share awareness with all. It may only touch a few...but that is a few more that will now know. Gilda Radnor's disease is atrocious. I hope someday we see the cure but foremost, the early diagnosis tools. Lois...this is for Barb!!

How many of you here have a friend or family member who has been touched by cancer. If there was just something – anything you could do to help would you???? And if that was as simple as talking would there be any way to stop you?A very Dear friend of mine is fighting Ovarian cancer, she is going through her third round of treatment in less than 3 years. It is a scary time for her and for me -- almost 70 percent of women with ovarian cancer are not diagnosed until the disease is advanced in stage, making it the most deadly of all cancers of the female reproductive system.

As a result of Barb’s cancer, I have been introduced to more information about Ovarian Cancer than I ever really wanted to know. But what I’ve found out is that so many of us really don’t know anything about Ovarian cancer and THAT is part of the problem. We all need to know so much more in order to help more women be saved and not to suffer.

National Ovarian Cancer Coalition has a program called “BREAK THE SILENCE”, created to provide education, increase awareness and encourage public dialogue about the symptoms and risks of ovarian cancer among woman and their physician.Arming woman (and their families) with the tools they need to begin to know more about Ovarian Cancer is the ultimate goal.

Tonight I’m here to empower you to start that communication among the people you know to help Break the Silence.In 2006 the Coalition sponsored a survey to accurately measure the “lack of awareness” and knowledge among women about O C in order to develop an educational campaign that addresses the disease disparities.
The results of the survey are staggering.
Only 15% of women are familiar with the symptoms of ovarian cancer.
82% of women have never talked to their doctor about the symptoms and risk factors of ovarian cancer.
54% of women who haven’t spoken to their doctor about ovarian cancer don’t think it’s an issue since their doctor never initiated the discussion.
40% of women stated they are not sure about the risk factors of ovarian cancer.

Another misconception was -- and I think this one is among the most frightening --
67% of women incorrectly believe that a yearly Pap test is effective in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer.IT IS NOT!
But enough about what we don’t know and don’t do. I’m here to change that.

Historically, Ovarian Cancer was called the silent killer because symptoms were not thought to develop until the chance of cure was so poor. More recently however this has been found to be false. There are symptoms that are more likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer than those who do not have it.
These symptoms include:
· Pelvic or abdominal pain or discomfort
· Vague but persistent gastrointestinal upsets such as gas, nausea, and indigestion
· Frequency and/or urgency of urination in the absence of an infection
· Unexplained weight gain or weight loss· Pelvic and/or abdominal swelling, bloating and/or feeling of fullness
· Ongoing unusual fatigue
· Unexplained changes in bowel habits

Women with ovarian cancer report that the symptoms are persistent and represent a change from normal for their bodies. The frequency and/or number of such symptoms are key factors in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Several studies show that even early stage ovarian cancer can produce these symptoms. When the symptoms are persistent, when they do not resolve with normal interventions (like diet change, exercise, laxatives, rest) it is imperative for a woman to see her doctor. If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, you really need to consult your physician.

Because these signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer have been described as vague or silent, only around 19% of ovarian cancer is found in the early stages.

In my conversation with the Co-President of the Northern New Jersey Chapter of NOCC, Lynn Franklin, she said one of the other problems is that some of these symptoms are considered vague by Doctors and can also be indicative of gastrointestinal difficulties. If a woman is treated for these symptoms as gastrointestinal problems and they are not resolved, Lynn stressed the importance of seeking out another Doctor, don’t assume that you are just having a tough time with a stomach problem.

As with other cancers, EARLY DETECTION INCREASES THE SURVIVAL RATE. “Don’t worry about offending your Doctor.” Lynn said that was a reason that some patients waited so long to obtain treatment, they didn’t want to offend their Dr!!!. Don’t WAIT!! You are too important to you, to your family and to your friends to take a chance that it will go away.It is important to know that there are some identifying risk factors, and while the presence of one or more of these may increase a woman’s chance of getting Ovarian Cancer it doesn’t mean that she WILL get the disease.

· Genetic Predisposition· Personal or family history of breast, ovarian or colon cancer
· Increasing age
· Undesired infertility
It is important to note that ALL WOMEN ARE AT RISK.

If I showed you a yellow ribbon, or a red dress, or a pink ribbon, you would know exactly what message I was giving you, but if I showed you a teal ribbon, or wore a “break the silence” bracelet, would you have a clue what cause I was supporting? Probably not!

Teal is the color of Ovarian Cancer Awareness. There, you’ve already learned something you can easily share with others that is an easy way to open a conversation. It is not hard to start a conversation.Now, here is what you can do to help BREAK the SILENCEEveryone here tonight can help make a real difference in the future of women. Talk about what I’ve told you tonight, talk to your family, your friends, but don’t let our silence allow one more person to not know about Ovarian cancer. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month. Please take time to help Break the Silence.

JUDITH ADAMS from Australia will be teaching at the shoppe in February. I hope/plan that she will be doing her beautiful two day [2 days] class on her Heirloom Bishop: called SNOWDROP BISHOP. Complete details on the class will be forthcoming. The planned dates are February 25 -26, 2010 . You will need your pleater, machine and plan on fun. It is done in White with white smocking. Email me to reserve your seat. For those SAGA people, Judith will also be hosted by the Princeton Pleater Chapter the 27th and 28th in the Princeton area. Two more days of classes there!! I will have that information shortly.

GAIL DOANE has graciously agreed to teach at the shoppe. The weekend of JULY 10th, 2010. We have not yet chosen our classes...but do know that they will be fun an lovely. The actual class will be a block up from the shoppe in the Community College classrooms, air conditioned, elevators...room to stretch. At least I hope that will be the case. but again, more on that later. AGAIN...email me for putting your name on the list. Full details will be published by mid October!! Summer Lazy Days

I am not sure why I don't get to this blog more often, I seem to spend many hours in front of the ole computer ...but no blogging. Just lazy I suppose...and nothing much new to report all summer. But now that summer is almost ended...Labor Day next weekend...yikes..I do have some news to post.

First: SAGA convention is the end of September in Indianapolis. 30 year anniversary. I will be there which will necessitate the closing of the shoppe for a week.

2. Mark your calendars!! Judith Adams will be teaching February 24,25,26? at the shoppe. A fabulous teacher from Australia. Smocking is just one of her many areas. Limerick lace and Princess Lace too. I think this time at the shoppe we will be doing a beautiful Heirloom Bishop dress. Something for first birthdays or blessings or just to be beautiful!

Christmas in July is in progress!! The entry table has items on it all are 20% off. And fabrics with red or green are also 20% off.

Beads are coming...crystals, pearls, and kits. NO I am not becoming a bead store, but I think adding some sparkle to sewing is fun. And making some small pieces of jewelry to go with outfits...not a bad thing. Watch for the sparkle to start in early August.

One other note of interest...my friend and mentor Beverley Sheldrick is home getting ready to deal with her Breast Cancer. I am asking for all the prayers we can send up for her conquest of the disease. I thank you all for your concern and support.
